Dear Band Student,
Thank you for planning to attend the 17th Annual Saskatchewan Band Association Workshop in Regina. I look forward to meeting you when you arrive at the workshop this July. It promises to be a very exciting and fun week with many different musical and social activities.
The workshop begins Sunday, July 27th at 2:00 pm with registration at the Riddell Centre foyer on the Main campus of the University of Regina (near the Kramer Blvd. and Wascana Parkway entrance to the University). After registration there will be a short meeting and introduction to the camp in the auditorium for all students, parents and staff which will be followed by a written theory test and an audition for placement in the bands. Once the audition and test are completed the students are done for the day.
To get ready for the audition, prepare a short exercise from your method book or a solo you worked on during the year. You may also be asked to play some scales and/or sight read some music. The theory test will be used to help place you in the right theory class for your level, so please, no studying.
Once again, group photos of the bands will be available for a fee of $15.00 (includes tax). Photos must be ordered and prepaid by Tuesday noon if you want them before the camp ends on Friday. CD's of the final concert will be available for $8.00 and will be mailed to the student’s home a few weeks after the end of the camp. These can be paid for at registration or at any time during the week.
Items to remember for Sunday:
a) Your instrument
b) Some music for your audition
c) Pencil*
d) Paper
e) One wallet sized photo (with your name printed on the back)
Photos will be returned at the end of the camp
f) $15.00 for photos, optional
g) $8.00 for CDs, optional
h) $6.00 for pizza lunch on Friday, optional
Please make cheques payable to: REGINA SUMMER BAND CAMP
* If you forget your pencil you'll still be able to write the theory test.
During the week (Monday to Friday) the camp will run from 8:45 am to 5:00 pm. There will be staff at the camp from 8:00 am if parents need to drop off students early. Students will need to bring a bag lunch each day, Monday through Friday (again, there is an optional pizza lunch on Friday for the students, $6.00). There is also the opportunity to eat lunch and or supper with the residence students. It is usually a very reasonable amount, but that amount has not been set as of yet.
There will be recreation activities planned for each evening (dance, movies, bowling, etc.). On Wednesday we will go to IPSCO Park for a BBQ and a swim. Students will not be home for supper that night but will have a practice at the university that evening after the BBQ. Students will be finished this day at 9:00 pm. All food for the BBQ is provided by the camp. More on these once you get to the camp.
Students will receive a general schedule on Sunday and their own personal schedule of band rehearsals, lessons and theory classes on Monday morning. The personal schedules can't be completed until after the audition and theory tests are complete.
The final concert will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, August 1st in the Schumiatcher Theatre in the Riddell Centre. The concert is on Friday night rather than Saturday afternoon, so that students and their families can still have a long weekend, so please plan to be there. The concert is free and all friends, relatives and parents are encouraged to attend.
At this point applications are still being accepted and I hope you will encourage your friends to attend camp with you, even though I'm sure you'll meet many new friends at the camp. Call the SBA for application forms at (306)783-2265, fax (306)783-2060, or on the web - www.saskband.org/bandcamp/sbc.html, by email – sask.band@sasktel.net, or call me at home, 584-1705, or by email - chris.jacklin@uregina.ca. Please phone after 7:00 pm while the school year is still going, it may still be necessary to leave a message and wait for me to return your call. Once the camp starts I can be reached during the day on my cell, 527-8080.
RESIDENCE STUDENTS ONLY
Residence Students should plan on arriving at 12:00 noon on the 27th, we’ll
meet in the lobby of the Riddell Centre. There will be a short meeting
and then the students will be able to go over to the residence with
the counsellor(s). This will aloow plenty of time for the students to settle ina and return for general registration at 2:00.
Meals are supplied from Sunday supper until Friday
supper inclusive. The rooms in the residence are set-up in quads, 4
rooms around a common area. Each room can hold 1 or 2 students and
one of the rooms is for the counsellor. The beds come with pillows,
sheets aand a blanket for the week. Each student is supplied with two
towels although it is a good idea to bring one from home for use when
we go swimming. The quads are very nice (a few years old) and there two
bathrooms for each quad. The furniture was all new for the summer games
three years ago. The common area has a kitchen with stove, microwave,
fridge and freezer and sink. There is also a sitting area which has
a few chairs and a hook-up for cable TV. There is a phone for making
local calls. Security is on site 24/7 in the lobby of the residence and the residence counsellors will be staying in the quads with the students.
I'm looking forward to meeting you in July. Have a nice summer.
Sincerely,
Chris
