Saskatoon Junior Band Camp 2011 Sunday July 17th – Friday
July 22nd University of Saskatchewan,
Education Building Dear Summer Band Camp Students and Parents; Welcome to the Saskatchewan
Band Association’s 2011 Saskatoon Junior Band Camp! This year’s camp is again going to be
action packed with many activities to make your week both educational and
fun! We have an excellent staff of
qualified professionals lined up who are excited to share their musical knowledge
with you. Aside from the many musical
activities (private lessons, sectionals, and of course full band just to name a
few), we also have numerous social activities planned to give you a chance to
relax and meet many new friends. Please read the following information carefully. It will likely answer many of the
questions you may have regarding the week. Sunday July 17th 2:00pm: GENERAL CAMP REGISTRATION - For all campers. Location: Education Building, just outside of Quance Theatre 2:00-2:45pm: RESIDENCE REGISTRATION - For those campers staying in
residence for the week, your first task is to check-in at the University Residence, Sask
Hall to drop off your luggage.
Room assignments and keys will also be distributed at this time. (Supper will be provided later on Sunday
night.) When you’re finished with Residence Registration you should make
your way over to the Education Building for General Camp Registration
which will already be underway. 3:00pm: CAMPERS ORIENTATION MEETING - All students
must attend. Parents are also welcome. You will receive important last minute
information about the camp and about the various activities that will take
place during the week. Location: Quance Theatre DORM ORIENTATION MEETING (Dorm students only) Immediately following the campers meeting a Residence Orientation Meeting will be
held in Quance Theatre. All campers staying at the dorm for the
duration of the camp are required to attend. Parents are again welcome. (Once the
meeting is done you can make your way to your placement audition.) 3:15pm: PLACEMENT AUDITIONS - Please come
prepared for your placement audition with a short study or solo that you’ve
been working on over the past year.
You may also be asked to play a scale or to sight read. We will try to make the audition process
as painless as possible. If you are a Non-Residence
Camper you are free to go for the night following your placement
audition. Residence Campers are stuck with us for the week! What does the rest of the week
look like? On the first full day of camp you will receive detailed
information regarding times etc.
The following is a general outline: Drop

camp, you will stay with us until
the supper break Pick-Up: 3:15-5:50pm supper break each day Drop

Thurs it's 9:30pm) We do have evening recreation after evening rehearsals and the
pick up time is 8:30pm each night except the dance night when pick up is
9:30pm. We’ve allotted an extra
hour to show off your latest dance moves!
Although the other evening recreation activities are still being decided
on, past years' activities have included a movie night, a scavenger hunt, a
games/karaoke night, and of course the ever-popular staff recital! This year we will also have Theme
Days! Get in the camp spirit
for the following: Monday – Band Camp T-Shirt Day – we
will be taking the band camp photo so you need to wear your shirt. (Shirts will be handed out at
registration) Tuesday – Tie Day – Wear your favourite neck tie or bow tie! Wednesday – Wacky Hair Day – The bigger the better! We expect to see all colors of the
rainbow as well. Thursday – Hat Day – Show off your best headwear – Roughrider watermelons are
encouraged. Friday – Concert Day - Brush off your band camp t-shirt because you will need it for the
concert. Dark pants and shoes will round out your outfit. Frequently
Asked Questions: Which musical supplies should I bring with me to camp? –
READ THIS CAREFULLY! Make sure to bring your instrument (in good working condition), a
folding music stand,
reeds, valve oil, cork grease, slide grease, mallets, drum
sticks, neckstrap, etc. All of these things should have your
name clearly marked on them. What should I bring with me Sunday night to General Registration
and the Auditions? - your instrument and audition music - $20 for a Camp Picture (optional) - $20 for a CD Recording of the Final Concert (optional) - $20 for a Photo Slide-Show of the many activities that will take
place throughout the week! (optional) What should I wear during the week? Casual dress is the requirement for the week (in addition to your
theme inspired items). The concert
dress will be dark pants and shoes, as well as the band camp t-shirt you’ll
receive at registration. Feel free
to bring a sweater, as it has been known to get chilly in parts of the
Education Building. Make sure to clearly mark your name on all of your
property. What should I do with my instrument etc. during the week? Quance Theatre will be available to store your instrument over-night
during the week. We will ensure the
room is kept locked. However, it is
recommended that you list your instrument on your home insurance policy, as the
Saskatchewan Band Association can not be held
responsible for any damage to or loss of private property incurred during the
Summer Band Camp. Do not bring unnecessary valuables with
you to Camp! Do I have to bring my own lunch? All campers must bring their own lunch, with the
exception of the campers staying in Residence. Lunch will be
provided for all campers staying in Residence. All campers are expected to eat lunch
with camp staff unless arrangements are made ahead of time with the camp
coordinators. This includes lunch
on Friday before the Final Concert.
Don’t bring a lot of spending money to camp, as pop and snack
machines are again off limits this year! Do we stay for supper or go home for supper? All local campers must be
picked up for the supper break each afternoon at 3:15pm and be returned to
the Education Building at 5:50pm for evening rehearsal. Residence students will congregate at
3:15 daily to walk over to the Residence for supper. Please do your best to pick up and drop
off your child on time to keep things running smoothly. In the past we had been able to
accommodate some non-residence campers’ request to stay with the residence
campers during the supper hour. We no longer have a residence that can accommodate
extra campers for meals so all non-residence campers will need to make their
own arrangements for the supper break. Do I have to participate in all the activities planned? Yes! The camp is
designed to give you the best of both worlds, learning
and fun. You will not be allowed to
miss or skip out on any of the camp sessions or recreation activities. Please don’t book doctor or dentist
appointments during the week of camp. Where is the Camp Office and how can we contact it? During the week of the camp the Camp Office will be located in Room 1039 of the Education
Building. The office will be open
from 8:30am to 3:30pm Sunday to Friday.
We will provide you with the phone number on the first day of the camp
(once we are assigned one). Someone
will always be in or around the office.
Feel free to call and/or leave a message. You may contact a staff member 24 hours
a day, as after hours the office phone is transferred to a cell phone. Can parents come and visit their son/daughter at camp? Feel free to come and visit the camp during the week. Please ensure that you check in with the
Camp Office to let us know who you are and who you are
visiting. We cannot interrupt
classes or lessons for visits. Are there concerts that parents can attend throughout the week? Yes. All held in Quance Theatre, the concerts are as follows: Staff Recital – Wednesday - 7:00pm Small Ensemble Concert - Friday - 10:30am Final Concert – Friday - 1:00pm Can I get a Group Photograph, Final Concert Recording and/or Photo
Slide-Show? Yes, yes and/or yes!
You can pre-order any of these at General Registration on Sunday
afternoon for $20 each. They will
also be available for purchase on Friday before and after the final concert. When does the Camp wrap up for the week? The 2011 Saskatoon Junior Band Camp will come to an end following
the Final Band Concert Friday afternoon.
