Congratulations to the 2023 Honour Band Musicians!

Saskatchewan Youth Band - Jr & Intermediate 

The SBA is pleased to be organizing the Saskatchewan Youth Band (SYB) program to encourage and celebrate dedicated grade 7 - 10 band students around the province. Selected students will participate in a few online sessions (dates TBD) prior to the in-person weekend on March 17 & 18, 2023 at Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School in Regina. 

All applications/auditions for the Saskatchewan Youth Band must be submitted online.    

Audition Requirements:

Each student will need a short audio audition which will be uploaded as part of the Band Director nomination submission. All audition requirements must be in one recording per student.

1.  For Grades 7/8:

i.    Concert Bb Scale, Quarter Note = 120 

ii.    Concert Bb Scale in 3rds & Arpeggio, Quarter Note = 120

iii.    Their favourite 16-measure tune that shows off their best playing ability

iv.    For percussionists – 9-stroke roll study & concert Bb Scale, 3rds & Arpeggio on a keyboard/mallet instrument

2.  For Grades 9/10:

i.    Concert Bb Scale, Quarter Note = 120

ii.    One octave chromatic scale, Quarter Note = 120

iii.    Their favourite 16-measure tune that shows off their best playing ability

iv.    For percussionsists – 9-stroke roll study & concert Bb Scale, 3rds & Arpeggio on a keyboard/mallet instrument


Submission Process:

    • There is NO fee to audition.  Audition requirements (audio recording only) are noted above.  Practice the audition material & record.  Smart phone recordings are perfect.  If using an iPhone, use the Voice Memo app to record.  
    • Recordings are accepted as MP3 recordings for upload.  You can convert your recording into MP3 format if needed using either iTunes or a free online converter such as https://online-audio-converter.com/
    • The SYB Coordinator and committee will review all auditions. Final selections for the bands are anticipated by late January. The SYB committee will contact all students who have been selected to participate in the 2023 Saskatchewan Youth Band (Junior & Intermediate levels).
    • If selected, students will be asked to confirm their participation by registering.  There is NO fee to audition, but there will be a registration fee of up to $75 for students selected to participate in SYB.

    NOTE:  If you were already nominated by your Band Director and provided them with your audition recording, please do NOT re-audition, we already have your recording.

    NEW in 2023 - Saskatchewan Jazz Honour Band

    Application/Audition Deadline: January 20th, 2023

    The SBA is pleased to launch a NEW Honour Band... the Saskatchewan Jazz Honour Band will take place on March 3 & 4, 2023 in Regina. 



    Calling All Grade 9 - 12 Jazz Students

    Jazz band students from grades 9 - 12 are welcome to apply/audition.  There is NO cost to apply/audition. 

    The Jazz Honour Band committee will review all auditions submitted by students to identify the successful applicants. Once selected, applicants will formally register to participate in the Saskatchewan Jazz Honour Band.

    BAND DIRECTORS: Please share the promotion poster and  audition information with YOUR jazz students. We hope to showcase the best jazz talent from across the province.
