Band Leadership Day - 2025 Highlights

Special Thanks & Recognition

SBA Events are successful because of the care, support and dedication of many individuals, community groups and organizations. The SBA is deeply grateful to the University of Regina’s Media Art & Performance Department for its support & assistance with this special session and to our other sponsors helping to make this possible.

Here is a list of sponsors for our Band Leadership Day. We greatly appreciate all of the support!

This year, the SBA partnered with the University of Regina to pilot Saskatchewan's first Leadership Development Day. Students, teachers, and parents from across the province came together to develop their leadership skills and apply them to the band world.

The day featured Dr Tim Lautzenheiser, a well-known name in the music education world as a teacher, clinician, author, composer, consultant, adjudicator, and, above all, a trusted friend to anyone interested in working with young people in developing a desire for excellence.

In the morning, Dr Tim held an interactive group session for all participants, where they learnt about building a culture of excellence and the importance of role modelling, competition, and cooperation. Students discovered that they have the power to take initiative and make a difference in their bands.

In the afternoon, participants split into small group sessions. Band Parents attended a session on "Building a Strong Foundation" lead by Suzanne Gorman, which covered incorporation, financial management, volunteer recruitment and more.

University Students and Band Teachers participated Dr Tim's "Shepherding Tomorrow's Leaders" session, inspiring them to be the teacher who makes a difference.

High school participants enjoyed practical clinics, where they put the theory they absorbed from the morning session into practical work by working through music.

Afterwards, the participants came together to watch a panel from our accomplished clinicians, who shared their own musical journeys, and how the things they learned in music apply to everyday life.

The panelists included (left to right), September Russell, Jesse Lindskog, Marie-VĂ©ronique Bourque, Cameron Church, Mark Preece, and Mike Farmer.

The day wrapped up with a session for band parents and teachers lead by Dr Tim.

Overall, 2025's Leadership Development was a huge success, serving a total of 111 participants from around the province in improving their leadership skills.

"I now want to think about how I can improve constantly"

"This session changed how I feel about how I can actually make a difference in my community and in helping others"

"I now think of myself as having more power to change the sound of my band"

"Ask. Don’t ever sit there not knowing how to do something. If you need more help, ask, if you want to do something, ask, don’t give up on it."
